Viceroy

 

 

The viceroy mimics Florida’s Queen Monarch, resembling the deep mahogany brown wings of this distasteful butterfly. Adults of the Florida Viceroy visit wet soil and fermenting fruit for an occasional nutritional or tasty drink.

 

 

Viceroy Basilarchia archippus floridensis (Strecker)(Family: Nymphalidae)

Habitat: Freshwater marshes, swamps, other wet areas where willows grow

Florida range: Central and southern Florida

Larval host plants: Carolina Willow (Salix caroliniana); Black Willow (Salix nigra); Weeping Willow (Salix babylonica)

Flight: April-November

Occurrence: Common
